Obama not getting Honorary Degree from ASU (Daily Show Video)

by Ness on May.13, 2009, under events, family, news

Current Mood:amused emoticon amused & confused emoticon confused

My sister is graduating from Arizona State University this week, and it’s a big deal all over town that President Barack Obama is speaking at their commencement tonight.  I had the opportunity to go, but passed it up last minute.  Would have had to arrange a sitter and sit in the stadium for 4 hours in 100 degree heat, mind you!  On top of traffic and security, it just wasn’t sounding like the most fun thing to do today.  Would have liked the experience if it was a little easier to obtain…

It is also big news that ASU is not giving President Obama an honorary degree.  I thought this sounded pretty ungrateful, myself!  Their excuse was that Obama hasn’t been in office long enough to prove himself and earn one.  Really?  The first black american predisent, the freshest face of ideas since John F Kennedy?  Wow, what a burn.

Well my MOST favorite talk show host, Jon Stewart, did a great piece last night on the Daily Show about who HAS gotten an honorary degree from this “prestigious” (LOL) college…(and the student interviews are hilarious, you know how they do!):

Beta Safari 4 Browser for Mac out!

I’m sure you’ve already heard about the long awaited Safari 4.0 Browser being released recently, but I just wanted to share how in love I am with it after 20 minutes of using it.  It is just super fast and has a sleek look to it.  My favorite feature so far is how you can view, edit and surf your Top Sites at a glance.

Here is a screenshot I took this am:

And for PC users, sorry but I believe it is Mac only.  Below is a link to where you can download it if you want to try it. It’s super easy to report bugs and whatnot by clicking on the little spider next to your search bar (which i think is just too cute).  And they are NOT kidding when they say its the world’s fastest browser.  I heard its 40x faster than Google Chrome but I can’t remember where from!

The Obama-meter

by Ness on Jan.27, 2009, under events, news

Current Mood:hopeful emoticon hopeful & impressed emoticon impressed

Well, we all know our new president Barack Obama made a lot of statements about what he wants to do for his country. Little did we know that the folks at PolitiFact.com were tracking it, and they have compiled over 500 so far.  And I must say, so far so good!  Really they refer to it as the Truth-o-meter (I like my name better however).  He has already officially kept 5 promises and has 17 in the works.  One promise is chalked up to a compromise (on lobbyist reform) and so far, none have been broken.  Not too bad for the first week in office :) Here is a link to the RSS feed for these updates.I must mention I have a slight case of what they call Obama-mania, or Obamania.  Yes, I think our president has really been putting in a serious effort to change American politics.  If you haven’t checked out the White House’s website since the transfer of power last week, I highly reccomend you do.  What you will find is simply refreshing, complete with a blog and weekley video update from The Prez himself.  I am impressed by the openness and honesty of the new administration, so far.  His new stimulus plan for our faltering economy is intereseting however, and I will be keeping a close eye to see how this all plans out.   For now, kudos to our new President, Barack Obama!

So, since it is very likely I’m gonna spend 7 hours in a middle seat on an airplane by myself comming up here soon…i’ve been thinking about learning how to knit b4 Hawaii.  I actually got a book on a whim at Mustang Library last week called Stitch & Bitch: The Knitter’s handbook.  Its so modern I love it!!!  I think I’m gonna work on a scarf on the flight, i may even be able to do two projects.  I’d love to do a media cozy or a hat or purse.  I am going to buy supplies tomorrow, soon i hope to be making items like these:

AND if i get really good at it, maybe i can knit a Chinese Charm Purse (square with bamboo circle handles) with THIS pattern:

…i would also like to do little projects, cell phone cozys are a great thing i could do for my amigos, seriously i’m sure i can do 5 or 6 between the flights!  LOL.

Here we come, Hawaii!!!

Current Mood:shocked emoticon shocked & excited emoticon excited & thankful emoticon thankful

Well the Hawaii trip is actually a go.  I was saying recently with the house situation and leaving Myles and the dogs for so long, that we couldn’t swing it.  But our tickets are bought, luxury condo by the beach is reserved and so is the car.  I am just super stoked!!  I cannot wait to experience the lush sandy white beaches, pristine blue water, and relaxed atmosphere.  All because my husband RULES at his job.

We are staying on Hawaii’s Big island, I’m not sure exactly where yet.  But we have a 30 day countdown!  All I want to do is see wildlife and volcanoes and eat and relax on the beach.  WITH a cocktail.  It will be a romantic vacation, and I’m terribly excited. Here are some pics of the local beaches and sights on our island:

I am already looking up where we can see lava, sea turtles, and the best pizza on the big island too.  Thank goodness for the internets, how ever did people plan vacations before?

NOFX: Backstage Pass (on FUSE TV)

NOFX : Backstage Passport
NOFX Backstage Passport Premieres 4/15 on Fuse - The funniest home videos are hereHELL YES!!!! Above is a preview for NOFX new show starting in April on FUSE TV. Its eight episodes and depicts their most recent tour which if you’ve been following, has been all over the world and back. I cannot WAIT until this starts. Here’s my official reminder to set my DVR in April! From NOFX’s MySpace Blog:

Thursday, March 06, 2008NOFX : BACKSTAGE PASSPORTFuse TV is going to be airing a documentary series on NOFX starting on April 15th at 10pm EST. Here is a statement from the band…So we got the bright idea to take two camera dudes on this sketchy tour we booked and make a documentary. We went to Singapore, Peru, Israel, South Africa, Korea; you get the idea…countries where maybe punk music isn’t too popular. After a few weeks we realized there’s way too much semi-interesting, sorta funny, kind of embarrassing stuff going on. How are we gonna fit all this on a DVD? So we thought maybe TV? Nah, that’s never gonna happen—we’re not nearly as funny as Travis Barker. But we made a little trailer anyhow and showed it to some of our friends at Fuse. They loved it and showed it to some of their bosses. Their bosses didn’t get it at all and told us they would call. We knew what that meant, so it was back to the DVD idea.We kept the camera dudes on tour with us for the next year and some pretty cool stuff happened. Well…not cool for us, but cool for the DVD. Stuff like not getting paid, cops shutting down shows, Muslims getting pissed at us, Jews getting pissed at us, scoring the wrong drugs, getting beat up by Japanese women in latex, getting beat up by a Russian man in a pointy hat and basically having a super great time.We finished the tour in South Africa and came home. We figured we might as well show it to the Fuse people again. (We showed it to HBO too, and they told us that maybe if we were U2 they would consider it…diss.) By this time Fuse had hired new people and the new folks loved it. They said they wanted to make it into a documentary series. Coolage! We signed the papers and now we have a TV show. After months and months of editing and fighting amongst ourselves, we have 8 episodes of a show, but after you account for commercials it’s only about the length of a really long movie. Think Titanic meets Spinal Tap. NOFX never had a video on MTV, but now we have a documentary on TV. Weird how things work out. Anyhow, it comes out in April sometime. My neighbors are never going to speak to me again.

Boy with Cancer hoping for 1,000,000 Friends

I came home from an extremely long day at work today to read this in my Myspace inbox. This story touched me, I thought it was pretty cool and wanted to share:

A fellow Potter fan in AZ

Body:
I live in AZ like you and am a Potter fan (in fact, my editor sits right next to JK Rowling’s editor in the Scholastic corporate offices).

Inspired by a young man with cancer who is trying to get 1 million MySpace friends, I am now striving to get 1000 MySpace friends by Feb 15.

James is getting care from St. Jude’s Hospital, and he’s trying to get one million MySpace friends. His page is >> myspace.com/bizwiz68. Could you help him out?

With a portion of the proceeds from the third book in the Grey Griffins series (published by Scholastic, Inc.), I am supporting the research of St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital while we try and stamp out cancer.

All the best,

Jon (J.S.) Lewis

P.S. If you could forward James’ link, or post it on your blog, that would be incredible. Thank you!

So won’t you please add him?
